Review: Desert Mouth by Electric Jesus

More power to the speakers; Electric Jesus is risen!

Don’t know them? Try the name Secrets In Scale, which the band toured under while supporting the likes of Birds of Tokyo, The Getaway Plan, and Dead Letter Circus.

The band released their debut album, Desert Mouth, today, and theirs is a sound to behold.

Sounding like the music of The Smashing Pumpkins, Wolfmother, and Omar Rodriguez Lopez (The Mars Volta)* put together in a blender and rearranged to form a rock opera, this album is wild but coherent, and surprisingly accessible.

Electric Jesus master their brand of heavy rock unlike most of the big names: with tact. There are some great melodies, even in the heavy parts, the vocals are perfect and the band is tight and dynamic.

There isn’t a physical release yet, but if I ever get my hands on one I’ll treat it as if it were a piece of the True Cross. You can hear and download the entire album at the band’s Bandcamp page: http://electricjesusmusic.bandcamp.com/

Oh, and did I mention they’re from Australia? Look out for their performances.

Don’t forget to tune into Prog Spectrum on 103.1 3BBR FM from 8PM on Wednesday to hear some of the album on West Gippsland’s own community radio station.

*(14/4/12) Oh, and add Muse and Queen to that list!
